I’m afraid I’ve lost track of my reading over the past couple of months, so what follows might be out of order. I’m sure you’ll get over it.
The Longest Crawl by Ian Marchant was on my Amazon wish list for a while and came via a job lot for Christmas 2007. I must tell you about the perils of wish lists and their negative impact on the joy of surprise at some point soon.
The first thing I’d like to mention is the font - Garamond 3 - which (apparently) has been in use for 500 years or so. Actually, it’s probably not the font’s fault but I found this book difficult to read in anything but the best light, which means it’s not a bedtime book.
A book about a month-long pub crawl from the Turk’s Head on the Scilly Isles to the Baa Bar in the Shetlands. A book celebrating our nation’s alcoholic heritage. A book that makes you want to sup a pint of bitter. Made deliberately hard to read. How rude.
Anyways, Ian Marchant is a witty and informative host and this is an engaging read. If you’re planning a walking holiday this summer this could be the book to take. Providing you’ve got a powerful torch in your tent.
